Global Information about the program:

The Hanen Parentprogram is an evidence based  very practical Therapyprogram. It is being run worldwide by Speech- and Language Therapists (SLT). It is developed about 40 year ago in Canada (www.hanen.org), meant for parents of young children facing issues in their speech- and language development and/or social communication and play skills.

The Hanen Parentprogram More than Words at Kinderlogopedie Amsterdam
• ‘More Than Words’, (MTW) for parents of young children that have difficulties in social communication, connecting in interaction, and play skills, and have hardly developed any, if at all, receptive- and expressive language.

Structure of the Hanen Parent program

• 7 online groupmeetings/eveningclasses (19.30-22.00) during 3,5-4 months (2 evenings per month). The participants are a group of parents of about 8 children with alike developmental problems. The online teaching sessions consist of Hanen Parentprogram powerpoints with a lot of video examples to clarify the communication techniques to be taught and learnt. The children themselves do not participate in the online sessions.
• 4 homevisits during daytime for videocoaching. The SLT visits each participating family individually. During the homevisits parents get the opportunity to practice the communication techniques and -strategies they have been learning during the online group meetings, this time in interaction with their child. For example during play or during daily routines. The interaction between parent(s) and child is videotaped by the SLT and the footage will be watched and analysed immediately afterwards by the SLT together with the parent(s). Video fragments of each family in an successful interaction with their child will be shared during the group sessions by the course leader. A very inspirational way of learning together, with and from each other.
